 BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in South Western Uganda. Nestled amidst the green slopes of Kigezi, Bwindi is located in a region that is known the Gorilla Highlands. The park is located over three districts: Kanungu, Rubanda and Kisoro District.The park stands at a refreshing altitude of 1900m and located in a region between the  Ishasha and the north of Kisoro. The park rolls eastward from the Albertine Rift Escarpment and covers over 331 sq kms.

The park is located against the Rwandan and Congolese borders. The impenetrable forest is located within fertile and scenic highlands that are arguably one of the most picturesque parts of Uganda. The area is characterized

with steep slopes that are covered in terraced cultivation, expansive blue lakes and magnificent volcanoes that roll over the Virunga Region.

The park covers 331 square kilometres. The park is situated within the districts of Kanungu, Rubanda, Kabale and Kisoro. The nearest town is Kanungu or Kihihi in the north (Buhoma), Kisoro in the South and Kabale in East.

GORILLA FAMILIES AT BWINDI NATIONAL PARK.

Mountain gorillas move to new places every day and never stay in one place twice. There is nothing like closet or furthest gorilla family, trek terrain may be different but the time taken is unpredictable. A 2 or 3 hour trek today could be tomorrow’s 6 or 7 hours.

BUHOMA SECTOR

The Buhoma Sector has 7 habituated gorilla families that are worth visiting and to start with;
Habinyanja Gorilla Family

The Habinyanja gorilla family has got 18 members including 2 silverback and it’s located in Buhoma. The group was first visited by the tourists in 1999. This name comes from a local word referred to Nyanja meaning a body of water. It also refers to the swamp in Bwindi where the group was first sighted. The tourists tracking this family need from 3 to 8 hours and it can make sense if they stay at any lodge at Buhoma area of Bwindi.

Mubare Gorilla Family

This was the first group to be habituated for tracking, the habituation started in 1991 and this group was named after the stunning Mubare Hills in which this group was discovered. It has a family size of 9 members including 1 silverback located Buhoma. The group started with 12 family members led by the dominant silverback ‘Ruhondeza’. In a few years the group grew to 18 individuals. Unfortunately, due to fights with other wild groups, it lost several members including the one Ruhondeza who used to take care of everyone else in the party. The group remained 5 members for several years until march 2013 when 4 other members including a new dominant silverback joined and its now an interesting group to visit.

Rushegura Gorilla Family

Rushegura Group was habituated in 2000 for tracking and received tourists in 2002. It is a huge group within the Buhoma area. It comprises 19 members including 1 silverback located in Buhoma. They started with 12 individuals including 5 females. This ‘Habinyanya 2 group’ quickly received a new name that derives from ‘Ebishegura’. A tree specie that was abundant in the home area of the new family. The Rushegura group is a calm family. In the past they used to cross the border and venture in the neighbor DRC every now and then but returned and have always been in Buhoma village and sometimes even wander through the gardens of Gorilla Forest Camp.

Katwe Gorilla Family

Katwe Gorilla Family has 7 Members (1 Silverbacks, 2 Adult females, 2 Blackbacks, 2 Sub-adult females) updated Dec 2019. The fourth and latest habituated gorilla group in Buhoma Sector is the Katwe gorilla family. It is headed by the dominant Silverback “Mahaane.”

Kanywanyi Gorilla Family

This is one of the new gorilla families that has been habituated for gorilla tourism in the Buhoma Sector. It is composed of five individuals. It is a stable family and it has not yet been intergrated into the Gorilla Booking System.

RUHIJA AREA

The Ruhija Sector has six gorilla families namely;

Bitukura Gorilla Family

Bitukura Group is among the newest groups in the forest. It is found and roams the verdant forest within the Ruhija area. This family comprises of 14 members including 4 silverbacks located in Ruhija.

Kyaguriro A gorilla family

The group has a size of 7 members including Kyaguriro is another habituated gorilla group that is not visited by tourists and has been reserved for reserved for research and other studies.

Oruzogo gorilla family

This family comprises of 16 members including 1 silverback located in Ruhija sector. The Oruzongo group one of the recent gorilla families opened for visitor access in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This family is situated between Ruhija area and is led by a dominant silverback ‘Tibirikwata’. It’s the latest habituated gorilla family and was opened for Tourism in 2011.

Mukiza gorilla Family

Originally group known as Kyaguliro before the split after the death of the leading silverback Rukina. The unfortunate death of Rukina inaugurated Mukiza as the new leader of the family.

Kyaguliro Gorilla Family

Kyaguliro B is a splitter group from the Kyaguliro A. It is composed of 8 individuals.

Happy Gorilla Family

This gorilla family is composed of 5 individuals.
The family is fully habituated and soon it will be added into the Central Reservation System.
